Our lands in Kerry is home to large herds of Sika. This species of deer is elusive and provides a challenging hunt, a quick eye, steady hand, stamina and patience is needed. In the end your reward will be a beautiful prize and a great adventure to look back at.
This hunting experience is rugged and not for the faint hearted. The Sika is hunted exclusively by stalking or stand hunting, always in the presence of a guide. Be prepared for long walks over bog and mountains, across stream and river. The most favourable times of the day for hunting are morning or late afternoon.
The deer doesn’t come to you, you must hunt him.
The rut season starts in mid to late September and goes till the first week of November. The best period for hunting Sika being from September to December. Towards the end of December the small flocks start to disperse and the hunt becomes extremely challenging. The male weighs about 60 kg (120 lbs) generally has an eight points antler, but individuals with 9 or 19 points have been taken. There is a maximum of 2 hunters per guide. For the male Sika deer, we can generally assume a success rate of 75%.
While hunting Sika, there will also be ample opportunity to hunt the wild Irish goat.
